Course Description
This tutorial advising section bridges the gap between the school and our city by inviting students to venture out and inviting writers to venture in. Part writing workshop and part academic seminar, in this course students will approach the promises and pitfalls of writing about NYC; they'll consider practical matters of pitching and publishing in (and about) the city; and they'll read some of the greatest writing ever produced about the Five Boroughs, from Melville to Joseph Mitchell, Didion to Patti Smith, Baldwin to Garnette Cadogan, and many, many others. Co-taught by a Lang faculty member and a recent Lang alumnus—both working writers—the course will allow students to see at least two paths—and consider many more—from college into the world of professional writing.
